Nederland, Texas Class of 1968
Through the Years
A Series that Collects Year Books
that Include the Class of 1968
	After publishing my father's (W. T. Block)
books on Kindle, I realized that history manifests in various forms. I was
raised in Nederland, Texas, a town steeped in history. It's a small
community where many of my high school graduation peers were also my
first-grade classmates. We were lucky that the different schools we attended
produced yearbooks to help us reminisce about those days. In the first
grade, a yearbook titled "My School Days 1956-1957: The Nederland Elementary
School" was published. During middle school, the yearbooks were named "The
Glide Path," and I published volumes IV and V (the last issue was in 1964).
The high school yearbooks were simply known as "Pilot."

This series serves as a representation of those yearbooks, ensuring that the
descendants of my classmates can access the history contained within them.

Nederland
Texas Sesquicentennial Edition
The Nederland Diamond Jubilee History and
Museum Committee expresses its thanks to those contributing material used in
this publication. Without your assistance the task of searching and
collecting would have been much more difficult. The information received in
both written and oral form has been invaluable in compiling this story of
Nederland. All articles in their original form are filed for permanent
record in the archives of the Windmill Museum. This will assure students,
writers, historians and other interested persons the availability of
information pertaining to the growth and development of our city.

As this book is nearing completion, the committee realizes that only the
surface of Nederland’s history has been explored. There are many questions
still unanswered, sites of historical significance that should be marked
permanently and additional written material collected for the sake of
	preservation.

Perhaps, as the readers of this history reminisce with others, memories will
produce treasures in the form of letters, documents, old newspapers and even
artifacts that had been stored in forgotten places. Any findings such as
these should be made known and hopefully shared by being placed in the
museum. Copies of written material should be made and filed for future
	reference.

The committee feels that through this printed effort the correct approach
has been made toward preserving Nederland’s heritage. It is our wish that
you will find as much pleasure and enjoyment in reading this story as we had
in collecting seventy-five years of exciting, challenging and fulfilling
events in the continuing saga of Nederland.

The Second Edition of the book features many of the original photographs in
cleaner versions. It also includes a table of contents, a table of figures,
	and a comprehensive index.

“No
Kings of Prussia”
by Derek C. Block
Six Immigrant Families Seek the
American Dream in 19th Century Texas
A history of 19th-century German immigration to
America is revealed through the point of view of struggling merchant and
Painter, Georg Block, his family, and acquaintances.

Six families from Pomerania Prussia endure the hardship of cross-Atlantic
sailing, disease, malnutrition, and economic failings to secure a better
life in Texas, a fledgling state.

No Kings of Prussia is not a historical narrative but rather a blend of
historical facts intermingled with brief genealogies of six Prussian
families. The book is filled with rich, color images of lithographs, maps,
photographs, newspaper clippings, and records which all help to illustrate
Pomerania, Prussia as it was in the 19th century.

While No Kings of Prussia contains some elements of genealogy, its
well-sourced historical accounts and vivid color images broaden its appeal
to anyone interested in German or Prussian history, particularly if the
reader's family originated from Prussia or Germany.

“Redbones of Louisiana” by Don C. Marler
347 p., SC, photos, maps, index, bibliography,
endnotes…$25.00
This tragic history covers 200 years of the people who
came to be known as the “Redbones” between South Carolina and their resettlement
in the Neutral Strip of Louisiana. Sometimes their history is violent as with
the Bearhead Creek Massacre of 1887 or the Orange County War of 1856. Although
this book does not have all the answers, Mr. Marler’s book is must reading for
the interested reader of Redbone history.
